Broadband

Broadband identifies technologies supporting data transmission (on the Internet or on a Locale Network) at a faster speed than the one supported by analogue transmission via modem. While backbone networks and, in the majority of cases, also intermediate networks (backhaul) are made of optical fibre, technologies that carry high-speed connection to the final user may vary.

The word broadband usually refers to the simultaneous transmission of a quantity of data to increase the speed of transmission. In a signal theory context the term indicates the technologies that allow two or more signals to share a common transmission line.

Italian and EU legislation lack a definition of broad band. However the European Commission uses the word broadband with the meaning of faster connection that the one provided by a modem. In this context the model broadband connection would be the one supported by optical fibres.

Many are the European and International projects with the aim of bridging the digital divide. Since December 2003 the European Commission has approved 7 public-funded projects (out of 9 project proposals) with the objective of bringing broad band connection to unserved areas.
